Two Lost Sons
Series: Parables: Stories From The Master
In “Two Lost Sons,” from Luke 15:11–32, Pastor Joshua Kennon continues the series Parables: Stories From the Master by looking beyond the familiar story of the prodigal son to see that both sons are lost. One is far from the father through open rebellion. The other is far from him through resentment, pride, and self-righteousness.
Jesus shows us that we can run from God by breaking the rules, but we can also run from God by trusting ourselves because we’ve kept them. Both sons want the father’s gifts more than they want the father, and both need the same grace.
The good news of the Gospel is that Jesus is the faithful Son neither brother was. He lived the righteous life we could not live, bore our guilt at the cross, died in our place, and rose again. Through repentance and faith in Christ, sinners can be forgiven, welcomed into God’s family, and given new life by the Holy Spirit.
Weekly Call: Name which kind of resistance is showing up in your heart and bring it honestly to God. Rebellion or resentment? Maybe some of both.
Stop running. Stop keeping score. Jesus paid it all.
