Neither Could Pay

Series: Parables: Stories From The Master

In “Neither Could Pay,” from Luke 7:36–50, Pastor Joshua Kennon continues the series Parables: Stories From the Master with Jesus’ parable of the two debtors.

One debtor owed more. One owed less. But Jesus makes the most important point clear: neither could pay. Simon the Pharisee could easily see the sinful woman’s debt, but he struggled to see his own. Her response to Jesus was overflowing with gratitude because she understood how much grace she needed.

This sermon explores the difference between comparing our sin to someone else’s and honestly recognizing our own need for forgiveness. Some sins carry greater earthly consequences than others, but every sinner stands before a holy God with a debt we cannot erase through good behavior, religious effort, or respectability.

The good news of the Gospel is that Jesus paid what we could never pay. He lived the righteous life we failed to live, bore our guilt on the cross, died in our place, and rose bodily from the grave. Through repentance and faith in Christ, sinners can be forgiven, reconciled to God, and given new life through the Holy Spirit.

Do you love Jesus like someone who knows how much they’ve been forgiven?

Different amounts. Same inability. Neither could pay. But Jesus did.
